Relay for Life tops funds goal
By JULIANNE WU
© St. Petersburg Times, The seven Relay for Life events in Pinellas County raised $360,100 for the American Cancer Society, about $65,100 more than the organizers' goal. Events featuring teams of cancer survivors, friends and relatives were held in late April and last month in Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Five groups surpassed their goals. Of those, the Dunedin group raised the most money. Its goal was $28,000, but the group raised $68,500. Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs also exceeded their goals by varying amounts. Clearwater met its $96,000 goal. Seminole's team, in only its second year with Relay for Life, raised $34,100, short of its $50,000 goal. "We are very happy we surpassed our overall goal," said Angela McAuley, Suncoast area Cancer Society development director, based in Pinellas Park. "Although the people in Seminole feel badly about not quite making their goal, the Seminole community will come back without a doubt and sponsor a Relay for Life event next year," she said. "The people there continue to be very supportive of the Cancer Society." McAuley said 60 percent of the $360,100 will remain in the Pinellas County area for local programs and services. The rest is earmarked for national American Cancer Society offices for research, educational programs and other client services. - Julianne Wu can be reached at 445-4221 or by e-mail: wu@sptimes.com © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
