The Tournament of Champions is in full swing and play will wrap up within the next week.
In the District 5 Major baseball division Monday, Northeast defeated Baypoint 10-0 behind the pitching of Austin Gaines, who struck out 11 of 12 batters to catapult his team into the tournament final.
In the loser's bracket, Pinellas Park National, who lost to Southwest in the championship game last year, defeated Seminole 12-2 and will play Baypoint in tonight's elimination game. The winner faces Northeast.
In Junior baseball, Pinellas Park National will play Northeast in a quarterfinal Wednesday at 6 p.m. Pinellas Park ripped Cross Bayou 17-0 on Saturday behind Jonathan Spincken's one-hitter. Also Saturday, Northeast beat Azalea 21-11 behind the hitting of Raymond Scrotsky (4-for-4).
In Major softball, Seminole got revenge for last year's semifinal loss by beating Southwest 12-7 on Friday, earning a spot in the final. Megan Lucy pitched six innings and Christina Barshel had three hits. In District 12 Major baseball, Palm Harbor American, Countryside and Safety Harbor American remain undefeated in pool play.
In Junior baseball, Palm Harbor National has already clinched Pool A with a 3-0 record.
In Pool D, Dunedin American, which was 3-0, was upended by a winless Tarpon Springs team 12-1 on Saturday. Ben Vaporis and Wess Livernois combined for the win on the mound.
In Senior baseball, Palm Harbor National defeated Oldsmar 12-1 on Friday behind the pitching and hitting of Michael O'Brien, who threw a one-hitter and had four RBI. Palm Harbor National went on to defeat Tarpon Springs 7-2 on Saturday to reach the semifinal against West Pasco.
Major softball featured Oldsmar defeating Dunedin 4-3 on Saturday to reach the semifinal. In the win, Elizabeth Pages pitched a complete game and Alexis Ford scored the winning run by knocking the ball loose on a close play at the plate.
