Family Center board to meet at church

LEALMAN -- The board of the Lealman Family Center is scheduled to meet 6:30 tonight at the Lealman United Methodist Church, 4070 58th Ave. N. The group is looking for volunteers to work in various programs to improve family life in the area. The public is welcome. For information, call 528-7891.

2001-2002 CommUnity campaign begins Tuesday

The National Conference for Community and Justice will announce its 2001-2002 CommUnity campaign "Raise Your Standards, Not Your Fists" and Mayor Rick Baker, Council member Rene Flowers and other dignitaries will speak at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on the steps of St. Petersburg City Hall, 175 Fifth St. N.

The campaign was developed by a collaboration of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, the Pinellas County Heath Department and NCCJ's Pinellas Youth Congress.

The Pinellas Youth Congress members participating in this program will present workshops and other creative activities that directly involve middle school students and encourage them to make healthy choices.

CommUnity campaign is aimed at reducing prejudice, discrimination and violence in our community.

Donate used baseball and softball equipment

If you have slid into home for the last time, consider donating that used baseball or softball equipment to a good cause. The U.S. Postal Service will even help you do it! Simply leave the donations at your mailbox on June 23. Include donations of baseballs, softballs, gloves, bats, uniforms and umpire's or catcher's equipment. Your gifts will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Suncoast, the St. Petersburg RBI Youth League, the St. Petersburg Police Athletic League and the Special Olympics. Call 328-6633.

Celebration of dance to benefit talented students

A Celebration of Dance is on the Palladium Theater schedule for 7 p.m. Saturday. The theater is located at 253 Fifth Ave. N in St. Petersburg. Proceeds from the show will benefit students who will attend summer study at Alvin Ailey, Houston Ballet or San Francisco Ballet schools of dance. Tickets are $10. For information, call 343-4122.

Urban League to award college scholarships

Four Pinellas county high school students will receive scholarships, amounting up to $2,500 annually, through the Pinellas County Urban League to attend the college or university of their choice. Application deadline is June 29. Call 327-2081.

Vintage automobiles to be on display at car show

The Sunshine Region of the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association will host a free car show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Vintage Antique Emporium, 7750 Park Blvd., Pinellas Park. Several vintage automobiles will be on display, made between 1949 and 1981. Call 547-6123.

Summer food program to provide meals for kids

St. Petersburg Junior College is sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program for children through July 25 at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus, 6605 Fifth Ave. N.

The program provides free balanced meals to needy children through age 16 participating in the National Youth Sports Program during summer vacation. The programs are approved for geographical areas where at least half of the children qualify for free or reduced priced meals during the school year. Call 341-4305.

Museum offers free admission for dads

The Florida International Museum, 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg invites dads to see the exhibits for free from noon to 5 p.m. on Father's Day (last admission at 4 p.m.). Exhibits include the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy Collection, Habana Esperando and U-2: The Spy Plane.

For the rest of the family, admission is $13.95, $12.95 for age 65 and older, and $5.95 for students for all exhibits. You can buy an annual pass for $2 more than the general admission price. Individual exhibit admission is available.

Juneteenth 2001 festival to be at Campbell Park

This year's Juneteenth celebration includes so many activities that anyone in attendance would be hard-pressed not to find something to enjoy.

A long list of musical entertainers includes Upward Life Ministry, Jazz All Stars, Hip Hop Showcase with Mikey Dred, and Nikki B. Three Negro League Baseball games, first at 6 p.m. Friday, then at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday, will delight spectators.

Kids need not worry they will have nothing to do, and few of them will leave the park without having had their faces painted. Vendors will be on hand.

The park is located at 601 14th St. S in St. Petersburg. Call 821-3833 for more information.
