Surveying society honors two high school grads

The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society honored students from two St. Petersburg high schools for excellence in trigonometry.

Jarrod Porter of Dixie Hollins High School and Peter Nguyen of Lakewood High School participated in the society's Trig Star program during their senior year. They took a one-hour test written by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and finished at the top of their classes. They are eligible to participate in a state-level trigonometry test and could compete for the national championship.

The purpose of the Trig Star program is to promote the high school study of trigonometry and to build an awareness of surveying as a profession among mathematically gifted students.
