BASEBALL: Clearwater's Chris Garrison has signed with Gardner-Webb, a Division II school in Boiling Springs, N.C. Garrison, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound left-hander, was 3-4 this season in helping the Tornadoes reach the Class 4A state tournament.
The 11-under Clearwater Slammers finished fifth out of 35 teams recently at the AAU state tournament in Auburndale, earning a berth to the national tournament in late July.
T.J. Becker, Billy Falasco and Patrick Eckelbarger combined to pitch 28 innings in the tournament, giving up 14 hits and striking out 28. Each had a win, and Falasco added two saves.
Chris Calhoon batted .545 with seven RBI to lead the Slammers. Graham Gibson batted .538, Becker .500 with seven RBI and Danny Carvin hit .500.
Chas Owens, Danny Porter, Nash Reling, Max St. Hilaire and Chris Toups led a defense that committed just one error in five games.
SOCCER: An adult six-on-six tournament is scheduled for St. Petersburg June 22-24. The Sun til Moon Clash tournament will be played at the 31st Street Sports Complex. Teams will play one game Friday and two Saturday, with the championship to be decided on Sunday. Teams may compete in any of the seven men's, women's and mixed divisions.
