Okay, so the Pittsburgh Pirates could not wait for Hernando High's Bronson Arroyo to make his major league debut. The right-handed pitcher entered the Pirates' 10-8 loss to Atlanta on Monday as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and grounded out to the pitcher.
It may not have been a stretch to pinch-hit Arroyo (even though it was for another pitcher, Scott Sauerbeck). Arroyo was batting .294 at Triple-A Nashville and proved to be a maniac on the basepaths. He scared the daylights out of his coaching staff last week by stealing home with a head-first slide.
Arroyo received a little big-league ribbing when travel delays put him in the Pirates clubhouse an hour late Monday.
"Hey, nice suit," reliever Jason Christiansen said of Arroyo's blue dress shirt and khaki suit. "The Banana Republic tag is still hanging there."
"I didn't know I wasn't supposed to dress nice," Arroyo told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
