Canyon launches new concert series
By JORGE SANCHEZ
© St. Petersburg Times, CRYSTAL RIVER -- Singer Lee Greenwood makes a return appearance to Rock Crusher Canyon Amphitheater in September to kick off a new series of seven concerts. He is scheduled to perform Sept. 1 at the amphitheater as part of his national tour promoting his first CD release in five years, Same River . . . Different Bridge. The concert marks the start of a new direction at Rock Crusher Canyon -- more one-day shows instead of the twice-yearly weekend festivals. The Crystal River Jam has been scaled back next year to a Friday night show at the pavilion followed by a Saturday night show at the amphitheater. The new season features seven more affordable shows, with acts that will be named next week. The September concert will be Greenwood's second appearance at Rock Crusher Canyon. He delivered a thrilling performance at the February 1999 Manatee Festival held at the amphitheater. In a polished and energetic performance accented with stage smoke and a light show, Greenwood showcased many of his hits. Among these were I Owe You, Dusty Road, You've Got a Good Love Coming, Fool's Gold and Holdin' a Good Hand. Greenwood has recorded eight songs that went to the top of the country and pop charts over a three-decade career. He is best known for his stirring anthem of national pride, God Bless The USA, which also was named Song of The Year by the Country Music Association in 1985. As part of the new concert series, the weekend-long festivals, with ticket prices of $40 and up, will be replaced by the seven concerts with a less expensive ticket price. Tickets for the Crystal River Jam, for example, will cost $15 for each of the two shows. The acts for the new season will be announced next week, said Sheree Monroe, publicity director at Rock Crusher Canyon. "We've made the changes to reflect the needs of our market," Monroe said. She said the Canyon's core concert market comes primarily from Citrus and Hernando counties. Each Saturday-night amphitheater concert will be preceded by a Friday night show in the pavilion featuring a rising star, and the new season will bring rock, country and blues performers. Individual concert tickets for the new season will cost $15; a season pass for all seven shows will be $75 and VIP season tickets are $150. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
