SALSA CAMP: Lecanto School of Art invites elementary students to a weeklong visual arts camp and fundraiser for the school July 23-27. Students will attend two workshops during a three-hour session and will have the option of morning or afternoon sessions. Workshops will include pottery, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and fibers.

FREE ACTIVITY GUIDE FOR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: The First Day Foundation is offering a free activity guide to help schools, parents and communities plan effective first day of school activities. The activities encourage parental involvement in education, parent-teacher partnerships and community support of schools.

The first five schools in every state to register their First Day of School 2001 activities will receive $50 from a grant provided by American Express, a major program sponsor.

The free First Day Activity Guide, written from the experiences of hundreds of schools across the nation who have presented First Day programs, offers a step-by-step guide to planning First Day activities, including: first day of school family activity ideas, a first day planning checklist, firsthand stories from participating schools across the country, resources and references.

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE: The American Association of University Women has a scholarship available under the Central Florida Community College Student Financial Aid Office. To be eligible, a student must be a Citrus County high school graduate, have completed at least one term of college work and maintain a 2.5 grade point average in her degree program. The scholarship is available for women whose schooling has been interrupted and who wish to continue pursuing a full degree. For information, call 726-6479 or 795-9314.

FLEXIBLE GED SCHEDULES: Withlacoochee Technical Institute is offering flexible-schedule summer GED preparation classes. For information, call 726-2430 or stop by 1201 West Main St., Inverness.

NEW CFCC CULINARY MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAM: Central Florida Community College is offering a new culinary management associate's degree program. The U.S. Department of Labor says the profession of culinary management is growing faster than average. Opportunities for advancement in the industry are best for those with college degrees in the field.

The program will prepare students for career positions such as general manager, assistant manager, executive chef, kitchen supervisor. It will combine classroom and hands-on experience and cover a wide range of topics, including food preparation and nutrition, customer service, garde-manger, personnel management, record keeping, inventory control, and health and safety standards. CHICKEN POX VACCINE: Children entering, attending or transferring to a preschool or kindergarten in Florida, who has never had chicken pox, are required to get the varicella vaccine against chicken pox. Children may receive the shots from private physicians or free from the Citrus County Health Department.
