Veterans urged to help inspire teens to voteBy PAULETTE LASH RITCHIE
© St. Petersburg Times, INVERNESS -- Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill has established a new program in Citrus County to encourage eligible young people to vote. The "Vote in Honor of a Vet" program hopes to highlight the importance of registering and voting and teach students about the sacrifices veterans have made to preserve democracy, Gill explained in a letter to area veterans launching the program. The idea is to inspire high school students on the verge of voting by providing them with biographies of living veterans or those who are deceased or missing in action. Veterans or family and friends of deceased or missing-in-action veterans are invited to fill out biography forms that will be distributed to high school students. "The more completed biographies we can acquire, the more interesting the project becomes for our students," Gill wrote in her letter. Veterans interested in participating can contact the program coordinator, Tammy Smith, at 341-6763. Gill asks that all biographies be returned to her office, 120 N Apopka Ave., Inverness, by July 27. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
