SUNSHINE STATE GAMES: Chad Schiferl, 14, of St. Petersburg, was named one of two Sunshine State Games athletes of the year for his two-gold medal performance at the 2001 Spring Games on May 10-13 in Lakeland.

Melanie Vega-Borja, 15, a judo athlete from Wellington, and Schiferl were named the Jimmy Carnes Amateur Athletes of the Year.

Schiferl and Vega-Borja were selected from more than 2,000 athletes.

Schiferl won his gold medals in the under-14 cycling competition and mountain bike racing (junior Level 2).

The road race was only the third of Schiferl's career. He has competed in mountain bike racing for six years.
