Mastering the art of quilts
A seascape on a quilt? Collaborators Gayle Fraas and Duncan Slade typically interweave dye-painted images of places near their home and studio in Maine into quilts such as Water Music -- Heading S.E., now at Florida Craftsmen. A triangle superimposed on a square and a single enigmatic eye add complexity to the work. Fraas and Slade formerly made screenprints but turned to dye-painting on fabric for its history, its relation to time (including sleep), and for the response it elicits from viewers. They are two of seven master quilt artists from throughout the United States who use the landscape, either metaphorically or concretely, in a show titled "Ground Cover." The exhibit, organized by Okaloosa-Walton Community College Arts Center, Niceville, is on view 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, through June 22. Closed Sunday. Free. Call (727) 821-7391.
