This week brings the celebration of Juneteenth, the day in 1865 that slaves in Galveston, Texas, heard about the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed two years earlier. The official holiday is June 19, but several activities are planned though the weekend and beyond.
St. Petersburg starts its celebration Friday night with the second Florida State/Tampa Bay Negro Baseball All-Stars series. The games begin with a Ladies First softball game at 6 p.m. Fri., followed by a men's baseball game between Tampa-St. Petersburg and Bradenton-Sarasota.
The tournament continues at noon Saturday with a women's doubleheader, followed by a men's doubleheader at 4. All games are free at Campbell Park, 16th Street and Seventh Avenue S, across from Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg. Call (727) 357-8177 for information.
Campbell Park also is the site of the annual Juneteenth Family Fun Festival on Saturday.
The daylong free event features 11-year-old hip-hop singer Nikki B of Atlanta and gospel, blues, reggae and jazz performers. There also will be children's activities, historical re-enactors, African dance, specialty items and food vendors.
The festival runs 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Call (727) 821-3833.
Mid-Pinellas also has a Juneteenth event Saturday: the Juneteenth Celebration and Fish Fry. The free festivities are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Ridgecrest Park, 12000 Ulmerton Road, Largo, and include games, live entertainment and prize giveaways.
Fish or hot dog lunches will be available for $5 for adults, $3 for children.
St. Petersburg finishes the Juneteenth celebrations with a candlelight vigil in Straub Park on the downtown waterfront, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It features the singing of spirituals and freedom songs. The event is free.
