Edwin McCain got his start opening for Hootie & the Blowfish. But wait, before you hold that against him, consider these anecdotes: 1. The South Carolina singer churns out his own anthemic, rootsy "heartland rock." 2. McCain's tune I'll Be was a big deal on Dawson's Creek for a spell. 3. On his last album, he sang I Could Not Ask For More, a tune penned by schlocky hitmaker Diane Warren, the same lady who wrote Unbreak My Heart.

See? That Hootie business seems almost benign now.

Edwin McCain performs with Gibb Droll at 7 p.m., Jannus Landing, Second Street between Central Avenue and First Avenue N, St. Petersburg. A 21 and older event. $15. (727) 898-2100.
