NORTHDALE -- Residents are rallying to put the finishing touches on Northdale Park by drumming up local funds to buy picnic tables for the new center.

Earlier this month, the Northdale Special Tax District board approved matching funds to purchase up to 10 picnic tables, at a cost of about $225 each, for the park.

Northdale residents Bill Castens, Marty Katz, Gary Moore, Charlie Speer and Wayne Wafford pledged money to buy five of the tables. But Castens, a tax district board member, said the group is looking for five more residents or businesses to invest in the picnic table project.

"One way or another, I've got to get the other five," Castens said.

Castens first became aware of the need for more tables at the park several weeks ago when he directed an effort to plant 10 trees there. After the planting, he asked park director Debbie Robinson what else she needed.

"She said she needed 20 picnic tables and a marquis sign," Castens said.

Castens said Parks and Recreation director Ed Radice has agreed to furnish the labor to install the heavy-duty picnic tables if the community can raise the money to buy the materials. Each table costs about $220 and a plaque acknowledging the donor would cost another $5.

"Debbie needs them throughout the park," Castens said. "If you were there Saturday (for the annual Northdale Summer Bash) we had about 350 people and you'd realize we really need them. She's got a total of six right now, and if we had had 20 tables, we wouldn't have had people scrounging around for lawn chairs."

For information about contributing to the picnic table drive, call Castens at (813) 340-9436 .
