Berkshire doesn't showBy PETE YOUNG © St. Petersburg Times, published June 16, 2000 TAMPA -- In an anticlimactic, but not unexpected, conclusion, The Berkshire School failed to show up for its appeal Thursday with the Florida High School Activities Association. Berkshire, a boarding school of about 130 students in Homestead, was expelled from the FHSAA on May 16 for rampant recruiting violations in its boys and girls basketball programs. The school had requested an appeal, but since the request, it had not been in contact with the FHSAA, leaving no one surprised at its absence Thursday at the Wyndham Westshore. Berkshire has indicated it will continue to play basketball in out-of-state tournaments, perhaps against post-secondary prep schools. The FHSAA is expected to decide today to sue Berkshire for about $14,000 to cover legal fees, fines and investigation expenses. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
