FHSAA approves transfersBy KEITH NIEBUHR © St. Petersburg Times, published June 17, 2000 TAMPA -- Four football players who transferred from Tampa Catholic to Jefferson have been ruled eligible to play this upcoming season by the Florida High School Activities Association. Quarterback Matt Glavich, the county's leading passer in 1999, linebacker Michael Gibson and defensive linemen Jonathan Bailes and Jerry Williams transferred after former TC coach Bob Henriquez left to become an assistant at Jefferson. FHSAA rules state that under normal circumstances, any player who follows a coach to another school must sit out one year. This, however, was a unique case because TC principal Brother David McMahon signed a waiver releasing the athletes, two of the athletes in question reside in Jefferson's zone and the other two were granted special assignment by the Hillsborough County School Board to attend Jefferson's magnet program. Parents of the students also indicated they no longer could afford Tampa Catholic's tuition. "We felt like everything was on the up-and-up," FHSAA associate commissioner Dan Boyd said. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
