Fires continue to be a threat in Florida

TALLAHASSEE -- Lightning strikes sparked 31 new fires Thursday, including a fire that destroyed 95 hunt camps in the River Ranch area of Polk County.

Since Jan. 1, 5,980 fires have burned 139,414 acres of timber and grassland in Florida.

On Thursday, there were 39 new fires, which scorched 1,125 acres. In Polk, 703 acres were burned Thursday. The fire in the River Ranch area was 50 percent contained Friday. A 10-acre and a 25-acre fire were reported Friday.
