Hospital may add wellness and alternative care center
By CHASE SQUIRES
© St. Petersburg Times, WESLEY CHAPEL -- East Pasco Medical Center might expand the Zephyrhills hospital's presence into the rapidly growing Wesley Chapel community as officials consider opening a medically staffed wellness and alternative care center there. The hospital has hired a research company to begin preliminary opinion surveys on what residents would support. Nebraska-based Midwest Survey & Research began surveying residents in east Pasco by telephone last week on interest in such amenities as an indoor jogging track and pool, spa and acupuncture care. The survey described a proposed center combining the amenities of a luxury gym with alternative and traditional medical and rehabilitation services, all of it overseen by medically trained personnel. Hospital spokesman Jerry Sterner said planning is in its earliest phase. A timetable has not been determined and a site has not been selected, but Sterner said the hospital is considering Wesley Chapel, an area that includes the booming Meadow Pointe. The 2000 census counted 8,936 residents in Wesley Chapel with a median age of 33.6. Sterner said the hospital already offers a medically staffed wellness and rehabilitation center at the hospital in Zephyrhills and said the facility is busy. "They monitor everything while you're working out," he said. "Someone comes by, they check your blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, everything." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
