Police investigating string of burglaries

Officers warn homeowners to make sure their valuables are secure and out of sight after the recent break-ins.

TAMPA PALMS -- Police are investigating a string of burglaries in the New Tampa area that appear to be related.

Records show at least 11 homes were broken into since May 1, with five of those since Memorial Day weekend.

Most of the burglaries have been in the Tampa Palms Area 1 neighborhoods, with a few in or around Hunter's Green.

Sgt. Jack Ragsdale said five of the burglaries seem familiar in nature. In those cases, thieves smashed out the sliding glass doors that led to master bedrooms, where they stole cash and expensive jewelry.

Ragsdale said the other burglaries were also similar, but in those cases thieves stole golf clubs from open or unlocked garages.

"That's been pretty sporadic," said Ragsdale, who estimates as many as 12 complaints in recent weeks.

Ragsdale said that as always, people should be cautious and lock their doors. Expensive items should be kept in a locked box or safe, and that should be hidden from plain sight. When possible, jewelry and other valuables should be stored in safe-deposit boxes.

If residents see suspicious activity, call the police immediately. Anonymous tips are welcomed, he said.

"It's the same crime prevention tips we like to give over and over again," said Ragsdale. "Simply secure your house, keep your doors shut when you don't need them open, and keep those doors locked. Don't assume your hiding place is a good hiding place."
