Workshop devoted to truck parkingBy Times staff writer
© St. Petersburg Times, PINELLAS PARK -- Council members plan to be all ears at a Tuesday workshop called expressly to hear what residents think about trucks being parked in city neighborhoods. Residents also will have a chance to sound off on carports and Dumpsters at the 7:30 p.m. meeting in City Hall, 5141 78th Ave. N. The workshop is the brainchild of Mayor Bill Mischler, who wants to hear neighbors' thoughts on the possible ordinance revisions. The most controversial proposal would allow commercial trucks to be parked in residential areas. The current rule, which prohibits parking commercial trucks in neighborhoods unless they're on business, has some curious results. A plain pickup truck is okay, but a pickup advertising a business is not. Under the revised ordinance, smaller trucks such as pickups could be parked in residential areas at any time; slightly larger trucks, such as furniture vans or tow trucks, would be permitted between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., allowing people to drive them home for lunch; and the largest, such as fire trucks, could be in neighborhoods only on business. Also on the agenda is a proposal to allow carports to be built in side-yard setbacks. The third ordinance change would force businesses to conceal large garbage containers and Dumpsters when they improve their property. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
