GOSPEL ISLAND -- Citrus County Sheriff's deputies on Sunday safely discharged two World War I-era hand grenades that were found inside a vacant home, sheriff's spokeswoman Gail Tierney said.
A Century 21 real estate saleswoman was reviewing material inside the house, whose owner is dead. The woman found a hand grenade and called the Sheriff's Office, Tierney said. Deputies responded at about 2:10 p.m. to the home, 100 S Thrush Point off Gospel Island Road, and found a second grenade. One was fully functional, Tierney said; the other's fuse mechanism was functional.
Deputies disposed of the grenades at a specially designed detonation area. Residents may call deputies at 726-4488 and arrange for safe disposal of dangerous materials.
