AchieversBy DONNA WINCHESTER © St. Petersburg Times, published June 20, 2001 Civitan Club awards five $1,500 scholarshipsThe Civitan Club of St. Petersburg awarded $1,500 scholarships to five 2001 St. Petersburg high school graduates. Claudette Bauer from St. Petersburg High, Lynn Coppins from Northeast High and Samantha Portuondo from Dixie Hollins High received Civitan Challenge awards for overcoming their physical handicaps to achieve their goals. Eric Chuk and Katherine Kostreva from St. Petersburg High received Civitan scholarship awards for outstanding academic achievement and service to the community. 3 St. Petersburg grads receive DAR awardsThe Caravel Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded scholarships to three 2001 St. Petersburg high school graduates. Alicia Whedon, daughter of Alison and Royd Whedon, received a scholarship to High Point (N.C.) University, where she plans to major in interior design. She is a graduate of Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School. Brianne Marie Schoonover, daughter of Susan and Leslie Shaulis of Great Falls, Mont., will use her scholarship award at the University of Great Falls, to study business management. She is a graduate of Charles M. Russell High School, Great Falls. David Ryan Druyor, son of JoLynn and Bill Druyor of St. Petersburg, will attend Florida State University to study history and English. He graduated from Lakewood High School. Apolo, Tomlinson win Braille group awardsTwo St. Petersburg high school students are recipients of the Mildred Shavlan Achievement Award sponsored by the Pinellas Braille Group. Johana Apolo, daughter of Gladys and Marco Apolo of St. Petersburg, has completed her sophomore year at Lakewood High, and Jessica Tomlinson, daughter of Eva and Jim Tomlinson of St. Petersburg, has completed her sophomore year at St. Petersburg High. The award is presented annually to visually impaired students who have shown outstanding achievement during the school year. Junior, Edwards win Burger King scholarshipsBurger King Corp. has awarded $1,000 Burger King Scholars Awards to two St. Petersburg students. Analisa Junior, a graduating senior from Dixie Hollins High, was a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the Multicultural Club. She plans to use the scholarship to study biology at the University of Central Florida. Latoya Edwards, a graduating senior from St. Petersburg High, was a member of the German Honor Society. She was a cheerleader and a hospital volunteer. She plans to use the scholarship to study English at Florida State University.
