Gun control's unexpected effect

© St. Petersburg Times, published June 21, 2000

Canada's tough gun-control laws haven't eliminated crime, but at least in one case they've made a difference in how criminals arm themselves.

A Canadian woman who spends her winters in this area passed along this brief news item from the Toronto Star:

Two masked men sprayed a surprised Halifax storekeeper with Silly String in a stickup bid, but were swiftly outgunned. The owner returned fire with an aerosol spray can of air freshener and the would-be robbers fled empty-handed, police said.

We find it hard to imagine Charlton Heston raising high a can of Silly String and declaring, "From my cold dead hands."
