    Scholarships

    Jarett Hess, a graduate of Seminole High School, received a full basketball scholarship from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and graduated with a 3.85 grade point average. He was a varsity starter for three years and participated in the Adidas Invitational Double Pump Camp, where he was selected for the Top 20 All-Star Team.

    Laura Marie Woodruff, a 1999 graduate of Pinellas Park High School, received an annual Golden Key National Honor Society scholarship. Woodruff, who is majoring in history and English literature at the University of South Florida, is student government senator, Student Concerns chair, Arts and Sciences College Council president and vice chair of the mid-county council of the Juvenile Welfare Board. She is the daughter of Mike and Jeannie Woodruff of Largo.

    Eight Palm Harbor University High School students received scholarships from the Dunedin Friends of the Library. All dedicated more than 200 hours of service to the library. The recipients were, Erin Hamilton, Maria Catsikopoulos, David Tarabocchia, Juliet Eckert, Jennifer Harrison, Melissa Amper, Lauren McKinley and Vince Luca.

    Honors and awards

    Three Pinellas County schools students, Vincent Gulielmo of Bardmoor Elementary, Tynell Cromartie of Meadowlawn Middle School, and Lee Koenig of Clearwater High School, were honored at the 15th annual Dreamers and Doers awards program. Walt Disney World Co. sponsors the program, which recognizes students who possess curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy. Nominees must demonstrate character, self-respect and dedication to goals.

    Jared Larson of Ozona Elementary School won the Devil Rays 2001 Essay Contest, which was open to all Pinellas County fourth- and fifth-graders. Forty-six schools participated in the contest, which required the students to write about an important baseball player or what life would be like without spectator sports. His essay was about Texas Rangers' catcher Ivan Rodriguez. He received a $500 savings bond, four game tickets, two tickets for his teacher, a special pre-game tour of the clubhouse and field, an autographed ball and a Rays T-shirt. He also received a $1,000 check from the Rays of Hope Foundation.

    Sara Iwanski, a graduate of Palm Harbor University High School, and Christina Montgomery, 2001 salutatorian of East Lake High School, received Good Citizen Awards from the St. Helena Plantation Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The award recognizes dependability, leadership, service and patriotism.

    Iwanski was a campus cheerleader and senior class president. She was a member of Quill & Scroll and National Honor Society and received the Interact Distinguished Service Award. She attended the Youth Leadership Conference, tutored elementary school students, taught alcohol awareness, served breakfast at a senior center and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. She is the daughter of Rita and Matthew Iwanski.

    Montgomery was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Spanish National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Students Against Drunk Driving. She received the U. S. National Mathematics Award, Algebra 2 Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, Smith College Book Award and 2000 Silver Key Writing Award. She volunteered at East Lake Community Library and for the teen advisory board, tutored at Carwise Middle School and participated in a tobacco prevention program in elementary schools. She is the daughter of Ron and Clarice Montgomery.
