Krall makes it up to us

Finally, she's here: Diana Krall makes good on her postponed engagement from earlier this year.

Krall, 36, was schooled at Berklee and takes that musical know-how to create traditional jazz piano music. Krall's playing is economical -- faithful, not flashy -- and she uses her lusty contralto to demonstrate the fine art of restraint and nuance.

Krall's live shows are intimate and rich with the standards we love. Who can resist her delightful They Can't Take That Away From Me? and Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You?

Diana Krall performs at 8 p.m. Monday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $29.50-$34.50. (727) 791-7400. -- GINA VIVINETTO, Times pop music critic

Big name, big fun

I Am the World Trade Center may seem like a lofty name for a boy-girl duo from New York. A side project for Daniel Geller, right, founder of the indie rock Kindercore Records label in Athens, Ga., the act also includes Geller's gal pal Amy Dykes on vocals. How did Dykes get the gig? Basically, Geller told Billboard, by hanging out one night at his apartment while he was fiddling with a new song. "God, maybe she can sing," Geller recalls thinking. And the rest is history.

Out of the Loop is the band's debut of fun electronic pop. It's a homemade, laptop recording that set Geller back just $200, but it's filled with big ideas. You'll find plenty of arty samples, loopy sounds and Dykes' singing, which turns out to be sweet and melodic.

IATWTC dazzled folks -- including me -- at last year's South by Southwest and CMJ music conferences. The little band with the big name is a lot of fun live.

I Am the World Trade Center performs with Marumari, Sea Venus, Chroma and others at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Orpheum, 1902 Avenida Republica de Cuba, Tampa. $5. (813) 248-9500. -- GINA VIVINETTO, Times pop music critic
