New string quartets
There's still some chamber music in the air before the summer heat blasts it all away until the fall. In St. Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Composers' Forum presents a program of new string quartets by members, including Joseph Ierna, Kendall Burnham, Vernon Taranto Jr. and Peter Blauvelt. They'll be played by Eugene Bazhanov and Kim Padgett, violins; Virginia Huchton, viola; and Theresa Villani, cello, at 8 p.m. Friday at the Palladium Theater. Tickets: $10. (727) 822-3590.
The Sarasota Music Festival winds up its 37th annual edition with three concerts. Flutist Carol Wincenc, pictured here, is featured in today's Artist Showcase concert, playing Daniel Paget's Romania, with pianist James Lent, at 4:30 p.m. in Holley Hall. Tickets: $17 and $22. Wincenc plays in Janacek's wind sextet Miadi on Friday in a program that also includes works of Rossini and Dvorak. Saturday's finale has a matched set of classics, Schumann's Op. 44 piano quintet and Mozart's Gran Partita. The Friday and Saturday programs are at 8 p.m. in Van Wezel Hall. Tickets: $20-$34. (941) 953-3434.
