Letters to the EditorsWal-Mart welcome, despite complaints
© St. Petersburg Times, Editor: In recent months I have noticed several letters to the editor on the opinion page from residents of Hernando County about the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter near the intersection of U.S. 19 and Spring Hill Drive. I am very happy to see that our residents can voice their opinions in print through our local newspaper, but what disturbs me is that it appears to be more negative opinions than positive. Local government, through its Planning and Zoning Commission and County Commission, is doing a fine job, and everyone should have an opportunity to voice an opinion either for or against a particular issue in front of both of these boards. If it's an important issue to you, then stand up for your rights at these commission meetings and voice that opinion. With that said, let me voice my opinion on the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter: One person wrote that it's no place for this type of business because Osawaw Boulevard is an evacuation route. Wait a minute. How many people are going shopping at Wal-Mart in a hurricane, flood or other emergency evacuation? For some reason, that just didn't make sense. How about ruining the picture-perfect land as it stands now? Although true, this property will one day be a commercial development, and as for the surrounding land use, we have the county sewer plant and the county trash transfer station and recycling site next door. Wal-Mart would be a welcome upgrade. One last point. Have you been to the Wal-Mart Supercenter on State Road 50 lately? So many residents shop there you almost need a bus to get from your parking spot to the front door. We are Wal-Mart shoppers. I hope this county commission understands that.
We need water, not water wastersEditor: We need water, not an Economic Development Commission with overpriced managers demanding bonuses and severance pay for doing very little. We need water, not developers bulldozing our land for swimming pools, lawns, etc. We need water, not golf courses and greens. We need water, not ornamental nurseries sprinkling all day with the sun shining. We need water, not industry using tons of water. We need water! Let all of the above bring in their own tank trucks of recycled water and let's see how quick they conserve. Now they are wasting our precious drinking and cooking water. Stop them at once or we will all have to purchase costly bottled water. How much water will new industry and developers use? Have them use recycled water or stay out.
Criticism, not photo, is inappropriateEditor: Re: Close to the future, June 1 Times photograph: One morning recently I received a call at work from my fiancee. She called to tell me the wonderful news that her photograph at Springstead High School's graduation was published in the newspaper. I was so proud. All I could think about was how hard she has worked in the past eight months, let alone how hard she has always worked. The photo of Mandy Loomis listening to Charlene Lewerentz' belly does not represent anything "gross" or "sad" at all. For most of the people I have talked to, it represents strength. For a person to be faced with so many challenges in a short amount of time, and to succeed, shows a lot of strength to me. So, just to get things straight for letter writers Lee Malinowski and Lilianne Thomson, you have no right to say what you have said. If you think you're bringing justice by complaining and finding things negative to write about for this newspaper, you're not. It won't stop teen pregnancy. The photograph shows that pregnancy while in school is not the end of the world. Your life can be however you want it to be; all you have to do is work hard and stick with reality. Just don't give up. If those letter writers are trying to put out the message that working very hard to succeed is a bad thing, and being negative toward achievements of others is a good thing, then you proved your point. If not, please mind your own business and get on with your lives.
