Becky Tapp of St. Petersburg Catholic was named 2001 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Florida High School Activities Association last week during its annual academic awards banquet in Tampa.

Tapp, one of 12 girls selected to the FHSAA Academic All-State team, received a $2,500 scholarship and a trophy in addition to a $500 award for being selected to the team.

"It was a big surprise," Tapp said. "I wasn't even expecting it."

Tapp finished her high school career with a 4.0 grade point average and was the SPC valedictorian. She also was president of the student government and a three-sport athlete for four years as a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams.

In basketball, Tapp was a Times all-county second-team selection, averaging 8.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. In track, Tapp owns three school records and was a Times all-county honorable mention selection in the 300-meter hurdles.

Tapp will attend Notre Dame, where she plans to study accounting or engineering.
