TAMPA -- Shaqena McAllister was fast asleep Thursday night when she heard three gunshots from her next-door neighbor's home at the Marbella Apartments.
"It was very loud and clear," the 20-year-old said. "At first, I was in denial. But then I realized something had gone down."
McAllister said she heard another neighbor screaming so she ran outside and found her neighbor's door open. She walked into Apartment Q and saw 24-year-old Jeremiah Weeks lying just inside his doorway, bleeding from the head, but still alive.
"He had on all his jewelry, his necklace, his watch," McAllister said Friday morning, still shaken by the shooting. "He had his cell phone in his hand. Maybe he was trying to call for help."
Hillsborough sheriff's detectives are looking for two men in their 20s who they suspect shot Weeks and then fled in a red BMW convertible with a black top, possibly a 318i model.
Sheriff's officials said one of the suspects uses the first name Scott. He is described as white, 5-8 to 5-10, medium build with blond to brown braided long hair and a full beard. A description on the other man was not available.
After hearing the shots about 10:30 p.m., neighbors called 911.
Weeks was flown to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
Records show Weeks was arrested in 1996 and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell or deliver. Two years ago, Tampa police said, Weeks was shot in the stomach after he argued with another man at a nightclub.
McAllister said Weeks was quiet and lived alone but had a 7-year-old daughter.
Drops of blood stained the sidewalk outside Weeks' apartment at 12406 N 15th St. "We're all very shaken up around here," McAllister said. "I've never heard of any problems around here before. It must have been a personal problem between them."
