© St. Petersburg Times, Scholarships Kevin R. Gunn, a magna cum laude graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, received a merit scholarship and the Founder's Award from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. He was a varsity letterman and a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. He is the son of Robin and Elizabeth Gunn of Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor. Gerald Durst, a graduate of Largo High School, received a four-year scholarship from the North Pinellas County Retired Educators Association. Durst plans to attend Stetson University and major in drama. He is the son of Deborah Durst. Honors and AwardsMegan Brill, of Carwise Middle School, won the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals fifth annual essay contest. This year's theme was "What My Pet Means to Me." She received a $100 savings bond and a commemorative plaque. The contest was open to all public and private Pinellas County middle school students. Naomi Teare, a graduate of Dunedin High School, received the 2001 ROTC award from the Caladesi Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Teare participated in ROTC for four years, where she served as administrative officer and a member of the color guard. She volunteered for Dunedin's "Paint Your Heart Out," and received the Girl Scout lifeguard gold award. She plans to attend St. Petersburg Junior College on a National Guard scholarship. She is the daughter of Tom and Karen Teare of Clearwater. Andrew Kamphey, of the Palm Harbor University High School International Baccalaureate Program, won first place in an essay contest sponsored by the Central Florida Chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers. Kamphey also won first place in the Score Four competition at the Mu Alpha Theta State Convention. Eight Pinellas County students won Trig-Star competitions at their high schools. The Trig-Star program, sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors, recognizes superior skills in trigonometry. The winners were Steven Lasswell of Clearwater High, Paul O'Rourke of Countryside High, Jarrod Porter of Dixie Hollins High, Sergio Nava of Dunedin High, Daniel Crimi of East Lake High, Peter Nguyen of Lakewood High, David Lindberg III of Palm Harbor University High, and Aaron Vorel of Seminole High. The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 11, Clearwater, announced essay contest winners from North Ward Elementary School. The winners were: first place, Daniel Moffitt, second place, Kelyn Augiron, and third place, Brian Rancich.
