TREASURE ISLAND -- Grand opening ceremonies for the Treasure Island Beach Center are planned for July 12 at noon.

City commissioners are planning a party with free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. The new beach pavilion and park are at 8000 W Gulf Blvd. on the site of the former Bedrox bar.

Commissioners bought the Sunset Beach building two years ago and demolished the restaurant to make way for the $350,000 beach center and playground.

The new center includes a screened meeting room for up to 50 people, restrooms and a concession area, although the concession stand is not expected to open until later this year.

The ceremonies are open to the public.
