Letters to the EditorsStill making music with the harmonica
© St. Petersburg Times, published June 25, 2000 Re: Conductor orchestrated a musical downtown, June 14. I have just read the article about Joe Lefter. I called Mrs. Lefter to remind her about something she had forgotten to mention. In the 1930s, Mr. Lefter came to my school, Forest Hills Elementary, and taught us to play the Hohner harmonica. I don't remember how often he came, but there were enough "kids" to make up a band. I'll be 75 years old this year, still have my harmonica and can still play it. We looked forward to his lessons, and I just wonder how many other seniors remember this special memory. Mrs. Lefter said to write you this note as a postscript to your article. Thanks for the memory.
Service clubs are for people with heartRe: Civic clubs dwindle as times change, June 4. When my oldest son graduated from Syracuse University seven years ago, I sent him a graduation present: a fountain pen and a penmanship book along with a set of golf clubs and a custom bag with his name and the Rotary International Emblem on it. In time, his penmanship has improved and the golf game has equaled mine. He plays in Rotary golf tournaments and participates in other fundraising events. The rigors of his job prevent him from joining Rotary. I hope someday he will experience the rewards of being a member of a service club. All service clubs do great works for the community, but more important, they bring together people with a good heart. Join a service club soon.
Annexation angers neighborsThe city of Seminole's recent annexation and rezoning of the Keswick Christian School and its properties has effectively nullified any future neighborhood involvement in Keswick's grand plans. I urge all residents of the surrounding area to remember the city's disregard and disdain for our needs and wishes the next time an annexation vote is put to us.
