Stepping in for Al

News Channel 8's chief meteorologist, Steve Jerve, has joined NBC's Today show to report the weather Monday and this morning. Jerve was chosen from 100 NBC affiliate meteorologists whose tapes were reviewed by Today producers. He is stepping in for Al Roker, who is recovering from knee surgery. NBC's Today show airs on WFLA-Ch. 8 weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m.

Siegel's cancer is back

Good Morning America entertainment editor Joel Siegel will undergo cancer surgery for the third time Wednesday. The 57-year-old has a growth on his right lung, he said Monday on the ABC morning show. He beat colon cancer more than three years ago, and last year had a growth removed from his left lung. Siegel, whose first wife died of a brain tumor in 1982, said his main concern is how to explain his illness to his 3-year-old son, Dylan. He'll lead a discussion on the show this morning on how families should discuss health issues together.

Short takes

HE'S ON "MILLIONAIRE": Doug Kufahl of Trinity in Pasco County makes it into the hot seat on ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire tonight. How much money does he take home? We can't say until Wednesday.

ENGAGED: Irish singer Sinead O'Connor, 34, has accepted a marriage proposal from Nick Sommerlad, 27, a Dublin correspondent for Britain's Press Association whom she met in February. The groom-to-be says they'll wed next summer.

GOODBYE, ARCHIE: Carroll O'Connor, TV's Archie Bunker, will be buried in a private Catholic ceremony today in Los Angeles. He died Thursday of a heart attack at age 76.
