World champion Belles won't repeat
By BRANT JAMES © St. Petersburg Times, published June 28, 2000 BROOKSVILLE -- There will be no repeat world championship for the Hernando Youth League Dixie Belles this season. The county's team of 13- to-15-year-old softball all-stars was swept into summer vacation on Sunday as West Pasco won both games in the District 4 tournament at Tom Varn Park. All three HYL entries, including the Angels and Ponytails, were eliminated in doubleheader sweeps by West Paco in the two-organization playoffs. The Belles were ousted with 6-4 and 15-6 losses. The Angels (ages 9-10) were defeated 8-2 and 9-0. West Pasco defeated HYL's Ponytails (11-12) twice by 9-7 scores. The HYL Belles beat Alabama's state champions twice last August -- by one run each time -- to win the Dixie Belles World Series in Evans, Ga. Only one member of that team played for the Belles this season although several were eligible. Many opted to play for former Belles coach Darin Dampier in the 16-18 Debs division. HYL has two teams remaining -- the Debs and Darlings (ages 7-8) -- which begin state tournament play Thursday in Zephyrhills. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
