TAMPA -- Stan Conley once tried unsuccessfully to get the girls basketball position at East Bay.

Recently, he landed the boys job.

Conley, a former Plant assistant and longtime middle school coach, was hired to take over a program that has lost 45 of 46 games during the past two seasons. He also will teach physical education.

Conley, 41, replaces Winston Davis, who was not brought back. Davis, who spent 24 years at East Bay, was hired as basketball coach and physical education teacher at Blake earlier this week.

"(East Bay) hasn't done well," Conley said. "But it's a program that if somebody goes in there and picks it up, it's going to be real rewarding."

Conley coached girls basketball for seven years and boys basketball for five while working as a physical education teacher at Horace Mann Middle School.

He served as junior varsity coach and varsity assistant at Plant for two years in the mid-90s. He also spent two years as a volunteer coach at Leto before leaving coaching a few years ago.

Conley, who sought a return to coaching near his Valrico home, said it will not be easy to replace Davis, who coached girls basketball at East Bay from 1980-84 and boys basketball from 1984-2001.

His first meeting with the players drove the point home.

"It was uncomfortable to be in front of, especially the kids that were coming back from last year," Conley said.

"I knew it would probably be uncomfortable for some of them, but the underlying feeling I'm trying to project is we're not going to be 1-18 this year."

Also at East Bay, Teresa Lovely replaced Christie Raburn as volleyball coach. Raburn, who taught health, was transferred to Durant, where she will teach health and science.
