Venus at the Dali

Is this the original fuzzy navel? Or just another chest of drawers? However you see it, Venus de Milo With Drawers, a 36-inch plaster sculpture by Salvador Dali, reveals more than it conceals. The surrealist frequently repeated the motif of drawers in both paintings and sculpture. His fascination with the Venus de Milo inspired the exhibit "A Disarming Beauty" at the Salvador Dali Museum through Sept. 9. William Jeffett, the museum's curator of special exhibitions, speculates that "the appeal of this image lies in its capacity to suggest the excavation of the deep layers of the unconscious mind." You can see it and 45 other works by 21 artists of the 20th century, borrowed from collections throughout the world, and hear Jeffett's lecture on the Venus de Milo's role in surrealist art at 6:30 tonight at the museum, 1000 Third St. S, St. Petersburg. His talk is free with museum admission (half price after 5 p.m. today). Call (727) 823-3767.
