NEW IN TOWN

Downtown St. Petersburg gets bread and coffee for the chattering classes in September. Atlanta Bread Company will open a bakery cafe for soups, salads, sandwiches and baked goods next to a new Starbucks in the BayWalk garage. The national chain now has locations in Clearwater and Citrus Park.

Arty Gulfport takes its coffee with spunk and hot pink at Java Jane's, a polka dot cottage in the Artists Village (29081/2 Beach Blvd., Gulfport; (727) 328-2050) with homemade cookies plus home-grown music some nights.

Far north Tampa gets Splash Ocean Grill in a former Semolina's in Northgate Square (3973 Van Dyke Road, Lutz; (813) 269-8611). Partners include two Shells veterans going upscale and Boston chef Parker Stafford. Lobster mashed potatoes, steaks with porcini sauce, fresh fish on spinach and seafood risotto are on the menu; dinner prices, $14-$24.

I'LL HAVE ANOTHER . . .

Bite of peach. I'm dreaming of summer menus with fresh cherries and especially peaches. In peach-happy Georgia, the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead does peaches in chilled mint soup, in crab and avocado salad, with grilled foie gras, as glaze on short ribs, grilled with shrimp and roasted with duck as well as dessert. I'll settle for fresh cobbler.
