Music with a heart

Sing for the Cure, an oratorio on breast cancer, is being performed this weekend by the combined forces of the Tampa Bay Gay Men's Chorus and Crescendo: The Womyn's Chorus and an orchestra, John-Philip Mullinax conducting. The work has 10 movements, each with music by a different composer and lyrics by Pamela Martin. Narrators, including breast cancer survivors, read letters and short stories between movements.

A portion of concert proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, which commissioned the work for the gay and lesbian choruses in Dallas, where it was premiered a year ago. The foundation sponsors the Race for the Cure, which drew about 7,000 runners last September in St. Petersburg.

Performances are at 8:15 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Ferguson Hall of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Tickets: $12-$75. Call (727) 865-9004 or check www.tampabayarts.com. -- JOHN FLEMING, Times performing arts critic
