CITRUS SPRINGS -- Two elderly women were killed Wednesday afternoon when their car was struck by another car whose driver lost control on a rain-slicked portion of County Road 491 north of Deltona Boulevard.
The women were in their 70s and lived in Crystal River, said Citrus County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Palminteri. Authorities declined to release the women's names until their relatives could be notified.
The driver of the other car was a Citrus County woman. Authorities released no further information about her.
Emergency workers took that woman by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. She was listed in critical condition.
All three women were wearing their seat belts when the crash occurred.
The accident was reported about 4:30 p.m. Palminteri said this is what happened:
The two Crystal River women were driving southbound on CR 491 in a Mercury Grand Maquis. It was not raining at time, but a storm had left that stretch of the highway slick.
Meanwhile, the other woman was driving a Nissan Sentra northbound on CR 491, the sergeant said. The Sentra left the road briefly -- possibly because of the wet conditions -- but then recovered near N Sugarsand Path, which is north of Deltona.
It appears the Sentra driver overcorrected, Palminteri said, and the vehicle spun counter-clockwise and slid across the double yellow line and into the path of the southbound Grand Marquis.
The two women in that car were dead at the scene, authorities said.
Officials closed portions of CR 491 after the accident.
