Attendance a top goal at Crystal River Primary

CRYSTAL RIVER -- Crystal River Primary School students were rewarded at the end of the school year for making school a priority and attending every day. Students who had perfect attendance received bicycles and seven perfect attendance students won $50 U.S. Savings Bonds in a drawing.
"One of our goals this year was to improve attendance," said principal Bennye Milton. "We talked with the Enhancement Council about what our plans were and they just jumped on it."
If a child works hard, Milton said, he or she deserves more than a certificate. They decided they would purchase bicycles for every child who had perfect attendance.
They worked on it all year, so the children would know their goal and the Enhancement Council, teachers and the others who helped would be able to purchase enough bicycles.
The school used other means, as well, to encourage attendance -- popcorn parties every nine weeks and publication of perfect attendance names in the school's Bear News. The teachers were recognized, too, each nine weeks if they had perfect attendance. "We thought we should lead by example," Milton said.
