TAMPA -- Two-sport athlete Kevin Nelson of Plant signed a baseball scholarship this week with Southern in Baton Rouge, La.

The leftfielder hit .470 with 20 RBI and 24 runs scored this past season for the Panthers.

Nelson, the son of Plant football coach Darlee Nelson, also played running back but said he wouldn't play football as a freshman. "I want to play both (baseball and football), but (Southern's coaches) kind of don't want me to," Nelson said. "I'll see what happens after this year. Maybe I could play football after this year."

Nelson also considered offers from Florida A&M and Central Florida.
