Go with the flow at river blast

© St. Petersburg Times, Independence Day gets started a bit early this year, as the Revolutionary River Blast 2001 hosts games, water sports, music and a fireworks show Saturday in Old Homosassa. The activities will take place at many resorts and marinas along the river. Macrae's Resort, 5300 S Cherokee Way, will have a barbecue at noon, a pie-eating contest and a red, white and blue "beer-belly" contest at 12:30, followed by a semifinal competition in the patriotic bathing suit contest. The Magic Manatee Marina on Halls River Road hosts a marine craft poker run beginning at 1 p.m. Live music will be offered all day at Homosassa Riverside Resort, Macrea's Resort and Kibbie's Dockside pub. A water shuttle will be available all day to transport people across the river. The festivities lead up to a decorated boat parade at 7 p.m. on the Homosassa River, followed by a fireworks show at 9 p.m. Sheriff Jeff Dawsy will portray George Washington crossing the Delaware during the boat parade. Tangles Beauty Salon and Day Spa in Inverness is sponsoring a Most Patriotic Bathing Suit contest on Saturday as part of the River Blast 2001 activities. Six semifinals are scheduled throughout the day at local restaurants. Two semifinalists will be selected at each contest, and they will compete for the title at 5 p.m. at Seagrass Pub, 10386 Halls River Road. The semifinals will be held at 11 a.m. at Manatee Campground Marina and Pub, 10175 W Fishbowl Drive; at noon at Charlie Brown's Crab House Monkey Bar, 5297 S Cherokee Way; at 1 p.m. at Macrae's Resort in The Shed Pub, 5300 S Cherokee Way; 2 p.m. at The Seagrass Pub & Grill, 10386 Halls River Road; 3 p.m. at Margarita Grill, 10200 W Halls River Road; and at 4 p.m. at Kibbie's Dockside (formerly Ramshackles on the River) 11210 Halls River Road.
