A Clearwater physician has been indicted by a Tampa federal grand jury and accused of illegally dispensing narcotics.

Jayam Krishna Iyer, 48, whose office is on E Druid Road, was arrested Wednesday on the eight-count indictment.

She could not be reached for comment.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa, Iyer is accused of repeatedly writing narcotics prescriptions for patients with no apparent valid medical reason between March and June 1999.

The controlled medications included Vicodin, Lorcet and Xanax.
