AchieversBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published June 30, 2001 ScholarshipsNajia Hamid, who is entering eighth grade at Safety Harbor Middle School, was a first-place winner in the Emeric Lazar scholarship contest. The competition, sponsored by the St. Petersburg Music Teachers Association, recognizes talented music students. At Safety Harbor Middle, Najia is in two exceptional education programs, Mathematics Education for Gifted Secondary School Students and Integrated Mathematics and Science Technology. She is the daughter of Ashar and Syama Hamid of Oldsmar. * * * Alexis Keller, a graduate of Countryside High School, received a $1,000 Burger King Scholars Award. The award recognizes scholastic achievement and community involvement. To qualify, high school seniors must maintain a 2.5 to 3.5 grade point average, work part time and be involved in extra-curricular or community service activities. Keller was actively involved in National Honor Society and volunteered at the Rigsby Center. She plans to study animal science at St. Petersburg College * * * Sheena Lofton, a graduate of Clearwater High School, and Janet Howard, a graduate of Clearwater Central Catholic High School, received Francis G. Prasse Memorial Trust scholarships from the Clearwater Breakfast Sertoma Club. The scholarship award recognizes academic achievement and community involvement. Lofton plans to major in communication and political science at Florida State University. She is the daughter of Carolyn Lofton. Howard plans to major in pharmacy and sports medicine. She is the daughter of Mark and Eileen Howard. Honors and AwardsCasey Burke, William T. Kelly IV, and Eric Tirnauer have been inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, which recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. Burke attends the University of South Florida, where she is majoring in education. She is the daughter of Libby and Jack Burke of Palm Harbor. Kelly also attends USF, where he is enrolled in the honors program. He is the son of William T. Kelly III and Victoria and James Sidlauskas, all of Largo. Tirnauer, who was also inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society, is in the premedical program at the University of Florida, where he is majoring in microbiology and cell science. He is the son of Stanley Tirnauer and Linda Erlich-Tirnauer of Palm Harbor. * * * Greg Lindberg was named this year's Dreamers and Doers Award nominee at Coachman Fundamental Middle School. He was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and received the President's award for Educational Excellence. Walt Disney World Co. sponsors the program, which recognizes students who possess curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy. Nominees must demonstrate character, self-respect and dedication to goals. He is the son of Marsha T. and David Lindberg of Palm Harbor.
