THE PITCHERS

Ryan Rupe

Rupe (4-7, 7.32) had gone seven innings in three straight starts, allowing six runs. Then Monday in Boston he allowed nine runs in 41/3 innings. Rupe was 2-3 with a 5.93 ERA in his first six starts, then went to the bullpen and to Triple A, then went 2-3, 5.80 ERA in his next six starts.

Ted Lilly

Lilly, 25-year-old rookie left-hander, is effective without being overpowering. Lilly (2-1, 4.75) is tough against left-handers, allowing a .182 average. The Yankees average better than six runs when he starts, and are 7-4 in his 11 games. He went seven innings against the Rays on Sunday, allowing two runs.

Outta leftfield

Greg Vaughn took rookie Joe Kennedy shopping Friday morning in New York, buying the rookie pitcher four suits and shirts and a few other accessories.

"When I came up guys did that for me, and I promised myself I'd do the same for other guys," Vaughn said. "He wasn't a bonus baby or anything, he had to work his way up. If you're going to be in the big leagues, you have to dress like a big-leaguer."

Kennedy, obviously, was floored by Vaughn's generosity, though he admitted he doesn't share Vaughn's taste for bright colors. "I guess he saw me wearing my one dark suit on all three road trips," Kennedy said. "This will sharpen up my game a little bit."
