Memorial fund established for family of lightning victim

TAMPA -- A memorial fund has been established to benefit the family of Greg Sherry, who was killed by lightning June 23 while fishing near the Howard Frankland bridge.

Pam Conyers, who met Sherry through her work as a dental office manager, established the fund Tuesday at the Bank of Tampa.

Sherry, 33, had a wife and two daughters, ages 6 and 1, and worked as a dental lab technician at Suarez Dental Laboratory.

Sherry was fishing with longtime friend Marco Ramirez, 25, when lightning struck as a thunderstorm passed through. Ramirez was slightly injured.

Contributions to the Greg Sherry Memorial Fund can be mailed to the Bank of Tampa at 601 Bayshore Blvd., No. 100, Tampa, 33606. For information, call Jennifer Brantley at (813) 872-1216.

Suspect injures Tampa man while fleeing from police

TAMPA -- A suspect trying to get away from police drove his stolen pickup truck into a car Friday afternoon, causing minor injuries to the other driver, authorities said.

Tampa police began chasing Carl Dean Bellew, 36, after seeing him driving west on Hillsborough Avenue, according to a department news release. Officers had a report that Bellew had been trying to sell guns at the Davenport Trailer Park at 4943 E Hillsborough Ave.

Bellew, driving a black Ford pickup stolen in Farmington, Mo., tried to pass a 1988 Volkswagen driven by Reginald A. Mulkey, 32, of Tampa, police said. Mulkey tried to turn left onto N 19th Street, driving right into Bellew's path.

Bellew ran from the pickup with Cpl. Richard Howell pursuing him. police said. When Howell caught Bellow, he was found with three rifles with telescopes and two revolvers reported stolen from North Florida, police said. He has been charged with aggravated fleeing, carrying concealed firearms, car theft and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.

Tampa lawyer nominated for federal aviation council

WASHINGTON -- President Clinton has nominated Tampa lawyer Arthenia Joyner to serve on the advisory council for the Federal Aviation Administration, which provides advice to the FAA administrator. Joyner served on the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority from 1991-99. The nomination requires approval by the U.S. Senate.
