© St. Petersburg Times, July 28, 1916 Agricultural high school near Largo under study LARGO -- Plans are being considered for the establishment of a county agricultural high school with a demonstration and experimental farm which would probably be built near Largo. Dixie M. Hollins, county superintendent of public instruction, and a number of agriculturalists have the matter under consideration and it could be presented to the county commissioners at their regular session next month. Largo is being considered as the site of the new school because there is an excellent agricultural district surrounding the town, according to Hollins. The people of Largo are also very enthusiastic and several residents spoke out in favor of the school at a public hearing at Largo City Hall last night. Plans call for a model farm of 15 or 20 acres on which could be grown a variety of crops adaptable to Florida weather conditions. It is also proposed to build a barn with a silo and dipping vat which could be used by all stock raisers in the county. As part of the farm equipment, a modest amount of stock, such as horses and cows, will be secured, to which other lines will be added as conditions will permit. For a number of years the Board of Public Instruction has considered establishing a department of agriculture in one of the high schools in the county, but lacked funds and legal authority. The Legislature of 1915 passed a law authorizing the establishment in the different counties of an agricultural department in the high school. A textbook on agriculture was placed on the list for the state, and teachers are required to stand an examination in that subject. July 10, 1946Ozona residents seek deep water OZONA -- The War Department will hold a public hearing at the Ozona Recreation Hall, Bay Street, on Aug. 15 to take testimony on the application for a deep water channel from St. Joseph's Sound to the Ozona turning basin. Col. A.B. Jones, who will conduct the hearing, says the group seeking the federal improvement must show itemized statements of the savings which could result from the improvement requested. This is the first time Ozona has requested a deep water channel. A hearing will be held in Clearwater on Aug. 14 to take testimony for a deep water channel in that city. July 8, 1960Clearwater plans surprise for travelers CLEARWATER -- The annual "shock of a lifetime" surprise for travelers motoring on a portion of Clearwater on U.S. 19 starts again today. The summertime series called "A Weekend in Clearwater" is sponsored by the Clearwater Jaycees. Each Friday afternoon for six weeks, an arrest is simulated on an unsuspecting couple by traffic Sgt. Kenneth Williamson. Lurking nearby are several Jaycees who explain that the arrest is a hoax, then invite the lucky couple to be their guests in Clearwater for the weekend. Local merchants donate hotel stays, free meals, entertainment and flowers to the winning motorists. July 2, 1955Clearwater Beach chapel opens doors CLEARWATER -- A service of Thanksgiving began the formal observance of the open house at the Chapel-By-The-Sea on Clearwater Beach last night as more than 200 people got their first glimpse of the newly completed auditorium and Sunday school addition. Only three years after the chapel itself was built, the building of a $50,000 addition was necessary to provide a place for Sunday school classes and expanded church activities. The auditorium is designed to hold 350 people and has a stage and projection booth. A new kitchen, two large rooms and four smaller rooms were also added. - Julie Church can be reached at (727) 445-4229. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
