Statement from John Graham, president, Daytona International Speedway, in response to the St. Petersburg Times:

* * *

"Our civic and charitable involvement in the Central Florida community is widespread, and we hope and believe it to be beneficial. We undertake this involvement for much the same reasons as the St. Petersburg Times and other businesses who seek to be responsible corporate citizens -- to be good neighbors and to try to help improve the communities where we live and work.

"In addition to our corporate financial contributions to numerous worthwhile causes, our employees give their personal time and resources to more than 200 area organizations.

"Along with our civic and charitable involvement, events at Daytona International Speedway generate a positive economic impact in excess of $1-billion each year. We believe these things combined have a positive impact on the quality of life for the Central Florida community."
