Poppy's reveres the Cuban sandwich

Joan and Randy Bennett have opened Poppy's Place at 9641 Bay Pines Blvd., Seminole. Cuban sandwiches are the specialty; the menu also includes black beans and rice, hoagies and salads. The business, which includes a deli and a bar, seats 55. Joan, who became a Cuban sandwich connoisseur while employed at Rio Cuban Sandwiches, in St. Petersburg, is in charge of daily operations. Randy manages the tavern division. Poppy's is open Monday through Saturday.

New lunch spot to open on Central this month

Central Thyme, a new lunch venue, will open this month at the SoHo South Art Complex, 2101 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Owners Barry Jones, a member of the management team for Salt Rock Grill on Indian Rocks Beach, and Bret Trifler, a St. Petersburg artist, will offer "traditional fare with flair," Trifler says. "For example, our turkey sandwich will have a caesar mayonnaise dressing, and our soups will be homemade on a daily basis," Trifler says. Central Thyme will be open Monday through Saturday.

Bardmoor YMCA names executive director

Jamie Bruning has been named executive director of the YMCA, Bardmoor branch in Seminole. Before the appointment, Bruning served as associate director of the Clearwater branch. In her new position, Bruning will supervise a staff of 40 and an annual operating budget of $750,000.

Lawyer opens practice on Central Avenue

Jesse L. Skipper has opened a law office at 535 Central Ave., Suite 412, St. Petersburg. Skipper, who practices business and employment law as well as general civil litigation, is a former partner with the law firm Skipper & Day in St. Petersburg. He also served in the office of Cook and Koch in Tampa.

Golf course director receives high honor

Jeff Hollis, the city of St. Petersburg's golf course director, was named Golf Professional of the Year by the Professional Golf Association, north Florida section. The association is made up of 1,400 golf course directors. Hollis joined the city as golf course manager 16 years ago.

TradeWinds resorts name two executives

Michael Choiniere has been named vice president of sales and marketing for TradeWinds Beach Resorts & Conference Centers, St. Pete Beach. He will oversee sales, marketing, reservations, conference services, and tour and travel functions for the corporation's three resorts. Before joining TradeWinds, Choiniere worked as the director of sales and marketing at the Westin Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. TradeWinds also announced that Drew Roth has been named executive director of national accounts. Before the promotion, Roth served as vice president of sales and marketing.

Super Truck Center moves to Pinellas Park

Preventive Maintenance Service Inc.'s Super Truck Center has moved to 12555 47th Way, Pinellas Park. Michael Bell started PMSI, a commercial fleet service and repair company, in 1993 in Hillsborough County. In 1995, he moved the business to 118th Avenue N in Clearwater. Bell says he brought PMSI over from Tampa because there was a greater need for the business in Pinellas County. Last year, Bell, who began his career in the trucking industry 15 years ago as a commercial vehicle lessor, wanted to open a larger facility to add equipment. PMSI has 12 employees.

Krauss Organization leases office space

The Krauss Organization, a commercial real estate business in Tampa, announces the following lease transactions. Kim Powers leased 1,056 square feet for medical office space at 7800 66th St. N, Pinellas Park; Lowe's Home Centers Inc. leased 2,028 square feet for office space at the same address.
