Steven Spielberg's challenging, enigmatic A.I. Artificial Intelligence debuted as the No. 1 film, taking in $30.1-million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Last weekend's top film, The Fast and the Furious, slipped to No. 2 with $20-million, bringing its 10-day total to $77.8-million.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider pushed its total to $101.2-million Sunday, the sixth movie this year to top $100-million. Shrek climbed to $227.5-million, passing Aladdin to become No. 3 among top-grossing animated movies, behind The Lion King ($313-million) and Toy Story 2 ($246-million).

Contract talks go on

Hours after their old contract expired, Hollywood actors went back at the bargaining table with producers Sunday in hopes of averting an industry-crippling strike.

The actors' contract expired at 12:01 a.m., but most of the negotiators appeared in good spirits as they returned to the headquarters of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in Los Angeles later Sunday morning.

Even with an agreement, Hollywood production could stall because producers wouldn't start a new movie until an actors' deal was made final, and it takes nearly eight weeks to complete preproduction work.

Fall TV shows, which begin filming in the summer, also could be delayed for weeks.

Clooney's moves

Ocean's Eleven star George Clooney, rumored last week to be the reason co-star Julia Roberts and Benjamin Bratt split up, is currently vacationing with his other Ocean's Eleven co-star, Brad Pitt and his wife, Jennifer Aniston, in England. Brace yourself for the Clooney-Aniston rumors.

For his part, Clooney has broken up with British model Lisa Snowdon and taken up with Renee Zellweger, even showing up to her birthday party last month, reports the New York Post. But friends doubt the Clooney/Zellweger match will last long.
